When the smoke cleared the kids had landed and weighed in 27 different varieties of fish and other sea creatures. As the kids dined on free hot dogs, chips, and soft drinks the raffle took place where 150 prizes were handed out. The Long Beach Commercial Real Estate Council donated the grand raffle prize a new bicycle, which was won by Alnai Ier. Many organizations contributed a variety of prizes for the kids. The key sponsors were: The Southern California Tuna Club, City of Long Beach Sea Festival, City of Long Beach Parks and Recreation Department, Fred Hall Associates, Fred Khammer-Alfredo’s and Belmont Pier, Long Beach Commercial Real Estate Council, United Anglers and Turners Sporting Goods. In addition to the raffle prizes, 200 more prizes of rods reels and various fishing equipment items were handed out by sponsors for a variety of accomplishments. It is estimated that almost every kid in the tourney received some kind of prize.
The winners of the big fish competition trophies were: 1st place Tristan Buckreis age 12 #2.8 bat ray. 2nd place Krysta Fryer age 16 #2.1 halibut. 3rd place Khalil Elsayer #1.8 spotfin croaker. The place winners all received a trophy and fishing passes for two on Pierpoint Landing sportboats.
The 2008 Kids Rodeo was hailed by all, as historically the best of them all. More kids participated in the tournament than ever before and more awards were presented. The Southern California Tuna Club deserves a pat on the back for giving our kids a wonderful clean experience they will forever cherish.
